O Rio Nabão, o Mouchão Parque e a sua Roda
O Nabão, o Mouchão e a sua Roda
Nabão é o nome do rio (provavelmente a partir do Séc.
The Nabão, Mouchão and its Waterwheel
Nabão is the name of the river (probably since the 17th century) that passes through the town and the region of Tomar. It is said to have had other names: “Nabanus”, “Tamaramá” (Arabic, meaning fresh water), “Thomar”, name for the water and the surrounding area prior to the birth of the medieval town, which was still in use at the end of the 16th century.
The river flows for 65 km from the Ansião Hills to the Zêzere, downstream to the Castelo de Bode dam. But it is in Agroal, 8 km from the town, where a spring is believed to have some medicinal properties that the river swells and prepares its triumphal entrance into the area. The inhabitants of Tomar have always recognized the economic potential of the river, hence the permanent weirs for producting hydromechanic or electir energy, which has always been used for irrigation and industry along its course and the temporary ones, set up between May and October for watering and moving the typical grand wooden waterwheels that were introduced by the Arabs.
The Mouchão is an island in the Nabão River right in the centre of the town, with plane trees, beeches, willows, elms and its waterweel, which the Arabs left behind many centuries ago.
The weel can move 750 hectolitres an hour, a calculation worked out by Nini Ferreira, from the fact that each ceramic jar holds about 5 litres and from the rotation speed.
A estrutura deste amplo espaço verde mantém intacta a planimetria e estrutura quinhentista.

Although references from the 15th century already mention the enclosure, only in the 16th century the wall that surrounded approximately 39 hectares of land was restructured and organised. This was done following the layout of the originally exterior walls of the Templar Castle of Tomar.
The enclosure made possible for the monks to be secluded, enabling them to meditate and pray in communion with nature. This also enabled the convent community to use the grounds for agricultural purposes.
After the extinction of the religious orders, the properties of the Order of Christ were sold in public auction, including among them the Convent of Christ, acquired in 1838 by António Costa Cabral. In 1936, they returned to state ownership and two years later the enclosure was transformed into a forest park. In 1986, it was listed into the National Parks, Reserves and Nature Conservation Services, being from then on known as Mata dos Sete Montes (Seven Hills Park).
The layout of this vast green space maintains intact the planimetry and structure of the 16th century. Among the architectonic structures of the park that stand out we have the Charolinha (a small copy of the Templar church of the Convent). It is a cool house built in the heart of the Forest for meditation and contemplation.
